LED floodlighting for a community rugby club
Handsworth RUFC has upgraded its rugby pitch with a new Lumosa LED floodlighting system, replacing its ageing metal halide installation with a reliable, energy-efficient solution. By reusing the club's existing six 13-metre lighting columns, the installation delivered a future-proof upgrade with minimal disruption and investment in new infrastructure.
The new lighting system consists of eight Lumosa CS660 MAX LED floodlights, carefully designed to achieve an average maintained illuminance of 100 lux, fully compliant with RFU requirements for both training sessions and match play. The result is uniform, high-quality sports lighting that provides excellent visibility for players while reducing energy consumption and ongoing maintenance.
A sustainable solution for a volunteer-led club
Like many community rugby clubs, Handsworth RUFC faced increasing maintenance challenges with its traditional floodlighting. Replacement lamps had become difficult to source, maintenance costs continued to rise and the reliability of the existing installation was steadily declining.
As a volunteer-led club serving one of England's most deprived communities, securing funding for a major infrastructure upgrade was essential. Working together with Funding 4 Sport, Lumosa supported the club throughout the grant application process, helping secure funding from Npower Business Solutions that made the project possible.
Lower energy consumption, better performance
The completed LED lighting installation has reduced the club's energy consumption by approximately 50% while delivering consistent, high-quality illumination across the pitch. The improved lighting supports senior rugby teams, visiting clubs and regular users of the training area, including Crufts dog training sessions.
By combining advanced LED floodlighting, expert lighting design and funding support, Lumosa helped Handsworth RUFC create a more sustainable sporting facility with lower operating costs and reliable performance for years to come.
